I’ve received so many messages from friends asking which ingredients they can use to substitute for another. Most times it’s really just because another trip to the shop is “so much effort” or when they don’t want to spend the money buying a whole bag or bottle of something they may never use again. Whatever your reason may be … we all need a little help from time to time.
So I’ve compiled a quick list of substitutions for the most common ingredients needed in baking. Everything from flour to eggs and flavoured essence.
Look the outcome won’t be 100% as you’d get using the right ingredient, but I promise you no one will even notice.
I often bake early in the morning or late at night when the shops are closed and have substituted all kinds of things like syrup, honey, sugar, maple syrup and generally work on taste and consistency. When it comes to some of the more tricky ingredients though it’s not always as easy as substituting 1 for 1.
So give these a try and if you have any questions please feel free to comment and ask. I’m always happy to help and am not shy to ask for advice myself when I’m unsure. That’s how we learn 😉
